After delivery, you and your baby will be assessed for transfer to our Mother Baby unit. While in the Birthing Unit you will have time to bond with your baby.  Once in Mother Baby Unit, our trained and dedicated nurses will provide support and education on feeding, bathing, discharge, and how to care for yourself after delivery.

Each of our rooms in the Mother Baby Unit are private rooms and each room is equipped with a pull-out bed/couch so that your support person can stay with you comfortably

In all areas of the program, patients and families are encouraged to be partners in their care. In Mother Baby Unit we initiated Quiet Time from 2:00pm to 4:00pm every day where patients are able to rest with limited disturbances and focus on getting to know their new baby and how to care for them – promoting resting, healing and bonding. This is representation of our patient and family-centered approach to delivering quality and safe care.

Totally Kids Clinic

Sometimes, an injury or sickness is serious enough that it is absolutely clear that you need to go to the Emergency Department. Sometimes it is a lot less clear, and you have to decide between a trip to the ED that evening, or a trip to a family doctor the next day. For adults, making that decision is something they can deal with. For children, it is a lot harder. Which is why Humber River Health opened the Totally Kids Walk-In Clinic in January 2018. The Totally Kids Clinic is open from 5pm to 8:30pm, seven days a week, year round. It is staffed by a nurse and a pediatrician. Kids are screened before they register, and if their complaint is serious enough, they are sent to the ED. Otherwise, they are seen in the clinic by both a nurse and a pediatrician.

Surgical Daycare

Children from age one to 18 receive care after surgery. Working with an interdisciplinary team, the child and their family are encouraged to participate in age-appropriate orientation prior to surgery to help reduce anxiety. This clinic provides education/support to parents and children pre-operative and post-operative.

Our Hug and Hold Program, the first of its kind in Ontario, allows a parent to go into the operation room to hold their child until their child is asleep.

Once inside the operating room, the parent is given an active role in comforting and coaching their kids during their anaestethic. Our Child Life Specialists make sure that parents are completely supported and prepared for what to expect in the operating room, so that even once the anaesthesia starts to take effect, everyone in the room feels prepared.
